For this Homeschool Hub we focused on game design, both digital and physical. I had a small group this month, and a large number of older teens (!!) and it was fun to see how some of the younger kids gravitated towards app creation and the older ones got out the paper and pencils.
This fall, I’ve re-vamped my app storytime into Appy Hour! I’m experimenting with different times for evening programs, and families are invited to bring a picnic dinner and eat during the program.
But another team focused on early literacy and media mentorship and using apps in storytime, which is also a passion of mine. They created a video to help librarians become good media mentors and be able to recommend apps and how to use apps to families. They filmed some app storytimes, interviewed parents, and talked with our local expert, Carissa. Oh, and they also interviewed me.
When I first decided that I wanted to do a comic creation program as part of our summer reading program, I was thinking digital comics. However, I quickly realized that even all the ipads I could scrounge up (this was before we got our brand new super shiny ipads from our friends group) wouldn’t be enough for all the kids I wanted to let in.
After the less than enthusiastic responses to the print books I read (tried to read) during my first storytimes, I decided to ditch the book and do an entirely digital program for this last one. I did a lot of thinking about what the point of the storytime was:
- to model good apping and joint media engagement to parents
- to address concerns about media use for hesitant families
- to gently steer families who use new media as a babysitter in a different direction
- to provide concrete and quality app recommendations and RA (AA? App Advisory?)
- to provide access to both tech hardware (the iPads) and software (paid apps that they can try before purchasing)
- to provide an alternative format to traditional, book-based storytime for kids who are not developmentally able to handle a regular storytime, no matter how much singing and dancing we do
I talk about my first new media evening storytime here, and I had my second iteration of this program last month, with some of the kinks worked out and double the attendance!
I introduced the program this time merely by explaining what we were going to do and talking about book apps to start.

After attending a New Media Training this spring, my goals included increasing our use of new media (ipads) in our programs and serving as a media mentor to our patrons. With that in mind, I planned a new media evening storytime, and advertised it as a way to learn about quality apps and how to use them with your kids.
