Stellar stories: books + art (the synesthesia edition)

Stellar stories is a new after school storytime for big kids program. I read a few books and then the kids get to do some sort of art project. I was already doing this for one of our local after school groups, and this year I opened it up to all kids. I’m excited for the chance to share some of the longer and more advanced picture books with older kids (K and up).

Books:

The day the crayons quit by Drew Daywalt
The skunk by Mac Barnett
Matisse’s garden by by Samantha Friedman
The noisy paintbox by Barb Rosenstock

Art:

Today’s project was a combination of painting using liquid watercolors and collage. I pulled out our huge scrap box, some squares of watercolor paper, and THEN I turned on some music and told the kids to listen to the music and see what they were inspired to create.

It took some of the kids a little adjusting to so few instructions, but then they got into. One kid was splatter painting to the beat of the music!
